Endowments
What is an Endowment?
Endowments are permanent funds invested to generate income for a particular area of ministry, organization, or program FOREVER. The principal of the endowment is never drawn upon; we invest the principal and grant between 3% – 5% annually from only the interest and earnings.
These types of funds are critical to the long-term survival of parishes, schools and other organizations as they provide a permanent and reliable source of income over time. This is how, with your help, we are building FOREVER VALUE for our community.
The Foundation offers endowments that are designated for a particular organization or purpose as well as those set up for the benefit of a field of interest.
Types of Endowments
Our endowments generate grants once annually. The purpose of the grants (how the money can be used) is set when the fund is established.
Field of Interest Endowments
This type of endowment is established to support a particular area of interest, such as liturgical music, social ministry programs evangelization, or supporting educational programs. Grants from these funds are offered during the Foundation’s Spring Grant Cycle where qualified organizations are encouraged to submit an application for a grant. Unlike designated endowments, the grants offered though these endowments are restricted by the purpose stated by the original donor and may be awarded to different organizations/programs each year.
Designated Endowments
This type of endowment is established to support specific organization(s) or program(s). The beneficiary is the same every year and does not submit an application to receive a grant.
School & Education Designated Endowments
This type of endowment is established to support a specific school or educational program.
Parish Designated Endowments
This type of endowment is established to support a specific parish or parish program.
Non-Endowed Funds
The Foundation manages funds that are not endowed. These funds may grant at a higher rate and/or be fully spent, depending on the terms of the agreement.

The Eucharist is central to Catholic life. One important aspect of this worship is music. This fund supports the development of parish liturgical music programs, aimed at enriching parish worship life and strengthening our communities around the Eucharistic celebration.

Bishop McGrath has been a constant source of love and support for lay leaders, clergy, and families. With this fund, we will invest strategically in strengthening our Diocese that has grown in faith with Bishop McGrath as our shepherd. As a people of God we are called to minister to those in need. Our parishes respond to that call with numerous and comprehensive community service programs. This fund allows us to support our parish social ministries, increasing their outreach and effectiveness.
As our parishes continue to age many have a growing need for refurbishment and repair. This fund grants in support of local parish repair and update needs.

On any given Sunday, 100,000 Catholics attend Mass at one of our parishes or mission sites. The Eucharist, sacraments, adult faith formation classes and our service to the poor are at the heart of our ministry. This endowment grants funds in support of faith formation programs, the Small Christian Communities prayer and study groups, the JustFaith program, and others.

Through enhanced stewardship, our parishes and diocese gain support that leads to greater financial stability. This fund grants in support of parish efforts to increase stewardship.
Designated Endowments
A Designated Endowment names one specific organization, program or ministry as the beneficiary of annual grants from the fund.
Catholic Charities is our Catholic social service organization, providing numerous services to those in need in the community. This fund assists in the organization’s effectiveness and efficiency by granting approximately 25% of the annual unrestricted monies necessary to sustain its vital programs.
The Catholic Community Foundation Unrestricted Granting Endowment is the unrestricted endowment of the Catholic Community Foundation. The Board of the Foundation determines the use of these funds each year.

Catholic Extension currently supports 91 mission dioceses, nearly half of the total number of dioceses across the United States. In these dioceses, the Catholic faith is thriving but resources are scarce. Catholic Extension’s mission is to invest in people, ministries and churches by supporting a variety of needs. These include seminarian education, lay leadership training, youth and young adult ministries, salaries for priests and women religious, and more.
Permanent deacons baptize, preach, and preside at weddings and funerals, as well as participate in a wide-array of ministries and services. Their work becomes increasingly important in the face of a growing priest shortage. This fund provides monies necessary for the education and training in support of deacons’ ministry.
The Fund for Vocations and Religious Ministries Endowment is invested for the long term, with annual grants benefiting the work of the Vocations and Religious Ministries offices of the Diocese of San Jose.

The Institute for Leadership in Ministry (ILM) trains lay leaders to serve in parishes. It provides an intense three-year program of theology, scripture study, and pastoral practice. 93% of our parishes currently benefit from current or former ILM students.
The Loaves and Fishes Endowment Fund benefits the Loaves and Fishes Family Kitchen, a nonprofit organization that provides nutritious prepared meals that are delivered and served to disadvantaged individuals with a special concern for families, seniors and the homeless.
The Martha’s Kitchen Endowment supports the work of the organization with an annual grant. Martha’s Kitchen is not only a soup kitchen but is also a central kitchen that prepares meals for other sites. Hunger is their primary focus: “The people served are people like you and me. We are all one paycheck, one catastrophic illness or one tragedy away from a soup kitchen.”
The financial cost for the diocese to prepare young men for the priesthood is approximately $27,000 per year for each seminarian. This funds reduces financial barriers to young seeking to respond to the Lord’s call.
Our Catholic faith calls us to seek social justice and equality for our neighbors. This fund grants to educational efforts of the Office of Evangelization, Justice, and Peace to inspire and educate lay leadership at the parish level to act in the name of justice and to understand our Gospel call to discipleship.
We nurture and support our youth to be faith-filled leaders for future generations. Our youth programs emphasis religious education and faith formation for this purpose. This fund grants to ministries that engage the young adult community.
Over 18,000 children are enrolled in our religious education programs each year. This fund supports the Office of Pastoral Ministry for the purpose of preparing Coordinators and Directors of Religious Education, Directors of Liturgy and Youth Ministry to be effective teachers to our children.
Education/School Designated Endowments
Catholic schools are an integral partner with parents in the upbringing and faith formation of our community’s youth. Unmatched academic excellence, discipline and values, makes Catholic schools a valuable and necessary good for future generations. However, as demand increases operating costs, tuition increases unfortunately restrict access to Catholic education for many families in need. This fund has allowed the Diocese to double its ability to provide aid to those who request it, offering 80% of those seeking tuition aid access to Catholic education.

The Cristo Rey San José Jesuit High School Operating Endowment supports the operations of the school. This is a perpetual fund with grants are generated annually for the school.

This fund supports the general operations of the Holy Spirit School.
The Notre Dame Education Fund is established for the purpose of providing financial support to qualified students deserving of a Notre Dame High School education and in need of financial support.
The Sacred Heart Nativity Schools Endowment is established for the purpose of providing Catholic education for low income elementary students at Sacred Heart Nativity Schools.
The Saint Christopher School Endowment for Tuition Assistance is invested for the long term, with annual grants to be used for tuition assistance Saint Christopher School families.

In 2003, the Cathedral Basilica Parish celebrated 200 years of service to our Catholic community. It serves as a parish worship center and also hosts hundreds of diocesan celebrations including ordinations, confirmations, youth events and other ceremonies. This fund helps to preserve and maintain this historic landmark.

Non-Endowed Funds
This fund grants toward the acquisition of land and the construction of facilities to establish new parishes. A portion of the distribution is repaid by the parish, thus replenishing the fund and providing the ability to grant to our next new parish.

The Pillar of Hope Fund for Student Counseling and Intervention Services supports counseling and intervention services for students from low-income families. This is not a permanently endowed fund.
